February 3, 2005"high kick"
yesterday i was driving around with dennis , he is a resident in the Red10, his truck is broken down and he is wanted by the authiritys for an unpaided parking ticket, ( so he is stranded and hobby lobby called to offer him a job, for a whopping six buck an hour! he turned it down) we went over to Martindale and looked at all the old buildings he said it looked depressing, and creepy, one of the buildings over in Martindale was were they shot Texas chain II the factory seen in the end. i told him that ones art probaley should matchs one living, i think my art looks great in Martindale, old farm buildings, etc. Dennis is more of an slick urban pop art with alittle Mexi-street edge, he grew up in El Paso,. Anther artist i know David Elliot(click to site) his studio always made an impression on me, his work sorta matchs this cold and dark garrge he works in , some thing like the cloud of his mind, is in the garrage, you can see the acumulation of years of work built up in there, back loged. he has been on the Austin seen for years,. steadly working and produceing alot of great work, . The ol' Austin still has this ol'hippy rundowned effect, even know it being "improved" with suberia expansionism there is still pockets of it. Its to bad Alternate Current passed away, this was a showing space, probaley the first of the "outsider" art culture to develope, i was in a group show there once, (it was a high honnor to me) the older crowd who ran it, had this old crusty ,stubborn , outlaw, anti high art effect which with enough angst and beer to go around made it the outsider's outsider,. it was one of my favorite!, Grady like it alot to,o Grady Roper of Proper Gander, I rember one time hanging out with owner, Pruit , in this small home made bungalow, he is a bit older, sorta saying "yea boys this is the life, wanna another shot!" i hated to see it go, they always had this racey fuck edge to them, . |
