anther stormy night

IM001062.JPG
well its another stormy night last night, built a fire and the tempiture just dropped and started picking up the wind,

I even painted a little last night, late at night the rain and strong wind made it feel as the roof is about to come off, i an now feeling the unorganised way i put this cheep tin roof on this building, with odd drips comming down from the ceiling,
View image
I have to go in ot Austin to take that show down at the Hideout, i hate that drive up there , in weather like this, last night while i was laying in bed think man i am going to get this building done once and for all,! branchs and rain skraping the building, and my poor chickens man it must be cold out there,
IM001065.JPG

Freddy came over last night, he was abit tired and we chatted a while i showed him the Sudduth painting, he liked it, i told him that if a 94 year old black man living out in the boone docks of Alabama could produce this kinda work, its something very noteworthy brilant!,(as a matter of fact) i went on to tell him that "with all the fancy suberban universtiy edu'ma'cating, look what its done, i bet no professior here in town can paint a bit past 70, " .
I always have the rural primative appeal, Fred's is like reserved clasicalism, kinda like armchair modernism. Alot of the work i bought recently has been these back woods Black older men (folk art) types, Toney, Perkins. I don't know why but i love this kinda work, i went on to explain to fred, i suppose its myth that prepels the work you cann't see the work with out understanding the myth,( but make no mistake about it your work will out live the myth) unless somebody destroys it. I explained that if i made a painting it was my last and i killed myself, you bet that painting would take on a more powerful significances, its the myth thats been attached to it., kinda like Van Go's ear. is it good work???? i am not qualafied to create such an opinion in these times , we only know what we like,.

I had to plea with ol Fred, i am not a raceist, but i love the old bluseman myths/stories/characters of the 30's , its had a porfound effect apone my work and habits to say the least, Freddy's work is like classical modernism, he like to put forth the idea of "valued content" over viod abstrctions, . I have tryed to convence hime to go crazy and spit painitngs out like a Picasso or P,Young, but he cann't, he is a refined artist, i talk about rambling with a brush , his is a more studied surmon. so this agressiveness on my part to push him into this role he has got Fred worked up over Race issues from time to time., its all apples and oranges, when it comes down to it

i started it last week, part of this Halloween thing i am into this year,

I think i am going to go over to the warehouse and start some bigger works and smaler thinkgs, all inspired from pfa's i invent here, i like to get out of this little studio and ride my bike down to this other place, drink a coule of beers listen to music and paint a while,. i miss that , talk to some folks,. i cona fore see the completion of these two new massive sets, comming up
IM001060.JPG
I nlike to sip coffer and play with these toys some how an amzing painting is spun from it, and now i figured using a proper line and alot of enamle white paint i can make these models into life, its all here before me

man with pumpkin

IM001027.JPG

Well, its a bright morning here in San marcos, everything is damp from the rain that must have slamed the area, I sat around last night and watched this old DickMiller movie "Buckets of Blood", you can get dvd's as cheep as 4-6 dallars, they are rereleasing all these old movies,.

I am also trying to figure out how this December will fall out, and i realise on dec 28, Chicken Dead Chicken is one year old!

IM001028.JPG
this painting isn't done yet

the movie reminded me of a thougt i had out in Brenham while i was painting, i was thinking of trying to rent a space here in the local art warehouse where all my pals work, i am a bit older than them but it would be fun to hang with the young urban expressionist, and show them a thing or to, In that movie made i think in the late 50's its about the beetniks artys crowd vs the squares i think they are making fun of it, but they had all these paintings on the wall of this cafe they hung out, kinda like Picasso and Miro copys, but i bet some one made them , a friend of the studio. i got me think about how many hero's of primative expressionism they must have been since 1950 , how many artist turning out houndreds of paintings like this? where did it all go
bg.JPG
back of painting, another self poit of me with chicken head pyrmid

I guesss in the context of history and ambition , lifestyle and simpley enjoying art making can cram one own need to find self worth other than just jacking off, but as i have believed you really have to love this stuff to survive, and as a lifestyle, well it will changs as some one changes cloths to fit there growth. A lot of the paintings i have gotten into this year i see as a set , i get into numbers and placing pictures in a balanced number scheame, its just being satified in making them complete! thats the task..

stormy cold night in Brenham

IM001038.JPG
Well i got back on the horse and am painting away trying to complete, what i figured is the last two sets of the year, FV(revised) and this other collection pulled together with the bar show

IM001035.JPG
One night over there in Brenham, , the rain came pouring down off and on, these photos were taken at the end of a painting session, it was hailing on the tin building real loud
IM001036.JPG

I rember getting a strong beer buz and listening to techno music as loud as it gets, and saying fuck this , and i put AC/DC on back in black, the wind kicked up and and it felt as if the building was showwered with rocks, but i didn't care, cause "giving the dog a bone" was playing,. the lighting struck and thunder, but "have a drink on me" was roaring, i sat in a psyochic daze looking at these new goat studie paintings for the other main larg painting, called "Land of Reject" nothing could stop me as i explaned! loudly this is what painting is all about, then the electicisty went out
and it was loud and pitch dark
ahh ohoo
then back on again, well its time to go on in,.

IM001037.JPG

I love the march threw the land and all the cool freashly fallen rain under a darken and flickering night scape of a land relaxed from storm, .

There is one main PFA made for all this work and a larg painting inpired from that and several studies
and
i worked on completeing this diptic, large , started it early this year.

above is my work bench ,

chickens

A couple of nights ago, it rained real hard, and the coup colapesd out there, i had to go and prop the thing up like a tent, while it was raining,. the chickens don't mind the lights they walk around the whole time, my roomates said it looks like a nativity seen from the other side of the yard.

i think i am going to build a mini chicken pen to make it more secure, last nigh i found a dog out by it, . i sllep real lite, and can leap out of bed at the slightest noise, and , one of there panic crows went off and bam i am out ther with my machie, i freaked the dog out,. he was still on this chain , like he made himself loss or something, he coward when he saw , me
i went GRRRRRRR!!! and when i realised he was just broken lose yard dog i started " com on boy lets go , get outta here"
then i said fuck it and went back to bed.

chickens

Boy, the weather has changed to being real humid, . last night i an attack came apone my new chickens, i know the yell, i ran out there and had to kick a stray cat out of the pen, . i think i ma going to put up these christmas light in the pen so the chicken can at least see the critters if they attack, it might work as a deturant. i made a small 10x10 pen for them , two hens two roosters.

IM001031.JPG

It Reminded me when i had those other birds,(97) i had four cochins roosters, (worst impluse buy ever) but they were fun, for nearly a year i kept this routine , were , everynight i would get up at the sound of the first crow, I knew there crows, and i would run out there grab one off the fence and put him in a box to buffel his blast, well i didn't realise that when you put a rooster in a box they get real mad, they hate it. after i collected each one and put them in the box at nigh they would still crow, just not so loud.
but the problem came when i kicked over the boxs in the morning and let them lose, it was like an outta control gang bar brawl in the morning and they would chase each other around and it would spill over into other peoples yards, it was funny to watch but , i started gettin nervious they would take there unrulely behavior out to the street.
One time when they went into someones yard , its like 7:30 in the morning i started to chase them this one bird "little boy" was runnin all over and i had this stick to sorta guild him back in the direstion of the yard, but he made a break in the opisite direction, so i threw the stick , right before him to reverse his direction, but ended up clockin him in the back of the head, and he fell over, i thought
" oh my God i killed little boy! " i was very upset and then i ran over to him and lifted him up and saw his little cute head dangling , i broke his neck, , so i took him back in ght morning and set him in a box to watch him he seem to be altight but very diorinated, sorta like he was blind , i must have just given him a chicken concusion, .
I had to keep him in the room casue one thing i noticed was that as soon as i dropped him down with the other birds they sinced he was wounded and started whopping his ass, so i had to keep him in my room for a while.
but if i would be damn that even with brain damage the bastard would crow. late at night in my room,
backkahaaah! bachaaaa!
i would wake up and right aside my bed put my hand on his little body, to let him know to stop
after a while he would go off again!, nothing effected these birds
one thing i concluded was that you will never condition a chicken not to crow no matter what.

collecting

well, to change the topic a bit i spent the most ever for a painting last night off ebay, i just had to have this picture by Jimmy Sudduth, i have started to collect what i consider really good folk art, by some of my hero's now while i can afford it, i don't know how many times they stuff i liked sky rockected as time goes on, i have already got Seymore Perkins and Tonney, one thing of note, alot of these fellows, the main ones happen to be ol' black men stuck in some way out place and a bit eccentric, why?

One of my good buddies Freddie McCoo, talked about this, i think its like the old likings of the primative modern, except this is the old south, which is disapearing. Something i noted on my drive over there last year. I think with artists like Sudduth they have appeared, sincer in approach and constant in style. kinda like a backwoods Giacometti ,. too attact fans , now crittques?, naaa, not thier style.
Also it helps to be a bit crazy, but i like crazys, it adds more flare. And its more inspireing , as an artist, this conitation of a lifestyle, the rual folk artist.
There is a whole southern seen to it,.

One of the funnyer note about going an working out in the big Bend Desart, is you really feel , something gong on and your this character inside this movie, , hey i think its alright to pretent to be in some movie, its like religious reactment , its romantic. and it may be the only thing real about art anyway.
