posted on Ebay,

and check out this collection as a slid show, "New/old Texas landscapes"IM001450.JPG
"Hanging chicken and old scarecrow in a cave" oil on paper
see ebay aution , up now

For the next two months or so, i am going to be making theses type of works till i leave, when exact?,

Well, i am probaly going to continue on in this vien for a while until the house issues are resolved, and it warms up a bit, major painting has stopped, now i am just tinkering around in these funny seens,
as a matter of fact the whole Big Bend deal might have to go on hold , depending on what happens with the house, i should resolve it in a while,. Yesterday i went over to RED10 and hung out with the boyz, Brandon,Vince,Denis, I can Tell Brandon is Anxious to get out and do something, i was telling Dennis , the problem with the "art world" and life in genral,. From what i can figure, the problem is about self respecet and where you put you character focus,. Self imposed painterly twilights , sorta introvered and beautiful can hold your attention for along time, but life and bills rack up on ya, and to make matters worse, if you don't nessarly see your "art" as a personal vision not to be shared but to be found, then you might have the abition to be somebody, which lies the problem.
Listening to Brandon's moans about "what the fuck" a game with no rules, no logic, no goal, whats the goal, and someone gets a prize.. can be prettty madining , as a male we like clear and obtainable objectives, . not random and political acts of rewards, (Art comps-shows etc).
Believe me , as daudting and wierd it sounds i have always been more comfortable playing DonQuattuax than an fancy art seen buster. i am more counrty, but none the less interested and are aware,.
Where does it all go personaly?

So as the last weekend here in the Red10 comes to a close i sorta see a snap
shot of four artist lives at stake, cause as time goes on and all the handi wares and artifacts left behind , it will be their visions and ambitions will prevale or be nothing but a hang over form the 20's.,
One of the things i have brought home to them is you gots to have activity, it all about activity,

i am going to shoot down there work and post it, as a profile, then on to Drek and R.Budd

Chicken house under constrution, do or die

well, major construction is going on in the chicken house, preparing for something big to happen, i cann't go into on my site, i fear my neightbors are reading it, now, so i might have to drop any house stories, . Last night me and Dennis were talking about Matt again, and he said he saw him on the computer, in the liberay, i said "yea dennis when he reads what i wrote he might kill me and maybe maime you,". not that i have said anything bad , he is paranoid squiziod.
The tention at the house is bad, and some bad blood is now being thrown at us by the church next door,.. so we have got to whip this place in shape basicly.
plus i am broke, and have to figure out how to get outtta this mess, and head out to west Texas, by late March, but one thing could change all this, .

Art Wise, humm, i am now only making these oils on paper, sorta the last of these biblical folk whimsicals i like to come up with like watching the painting move and then mid way calling it out, with this funny line, . all posted on ebay, see cataloge

I guess i am sorta burned out, basicly and now feel the need to to straight shit up around here,

Chicken george predicts his own death in 2042!
being put on Ebay soon

last night over at the warehouse Dennis got a call and sold this painting,

View image

we started talking about it, he said it was a painting about Crazy Matts plight into Squtziodphria, a couple of weeks ago i told him all about Matt and how long i have known him , dennis just sorta knows him, i told him this thing was progessive, it evolved, but you could see how it was all along, breaking away from responciblitys and people, , , loss of job, loss of truck, etc it took something like five years to get to where he is at now, while he was telling folks he was just down on his luck . waiting to get a job.
I guess i must be scaring the crap out of dennis cause he is stuck in the warehouse (truck busted and no job either) i rember telling him "these are the best days of his life, your work is more focused, and your like stuck in a prison, helll it could only last for a couple of years! before you go mad!" I guess instead of dealing with things like any good nerd we excape into our hobby time, in this case as much as mine the more i wanted to excape life i did art , i used art to get outta life, and became and artist in the process,.
View image Dennis in wheelchair
One of the things i have been telling these guys over in Red 10 is get outta and go somewhere be a bum for a while and run around alot it will open you eyes to some differnt possiblitys,
One thing i do credit crazy matt for is his enduance to with stand the most unbaerable living , he could survivle a nuclear bast ! mind over body issues, i sorta see him as a role model for someone to simply block out undesireable cricumstances, cause i am gonna need the power of Matt to handle West Texas, but its really beautiful out there, i could handle about anything out there.

IM001430.JPG
Well its a friday , over cast, and i have to do alot of work on the yard and such
and
the historic commision had its meeting last night, humm
here is the plans as they unfold , til operation,
El' Campinia Van Horne

I went and spoke at the meeting it was a friendly atmosphere, but there was some opposition to the whole deal i spoke my part, but i am going to have to prepare for this whole deal comming down which looks like Sept this year. So for the next couple of months i am going to have to dominate this place with picket trim and heads in all, basicly wrap the whole freaken house with it to claim stylistic dominaces over it,.
so this means i am going to be taking a break from art for a while, i am about burned out, and its good to do nothing for a while before i head out west.

the meeting was quit fun, one of the funny momnets was when the preacher next door, (there is a church next to us) wanted to know when i would sell the house to him or give it to them,.

so i suppose the next month or so , until late march the site will ne nothing but house trivia and rounding up my old sets, organising things

the work behind mine is Justin,

I think i am going to throw an end of the month sunday smoke a thon, meaning smoking a lot of chicken,. sorts the end of this era, and cataloge all the work and phot up some more work mane by some of the artists over there. I am going to try and get Justin to come out with me to the big bend later on whaen i get settled he would fit in totaly out there he has this west texas style, . i would mind presuading schliefke to do the same,.
When i went out ther before in Redford with Serg it was sorta a painters computition but ended up being more like who was gonna leave first, was the loser, . (i won), but i wanted it to be more about paintng, things got so personal out there that it got unbearable, we just didn't see eye to ey what was art it was like and skeptic and a fanatic writting a book ,.
I also went down and saw DD in SA, He seems to be dong pretty good. has a show up right now of plaster carved underwhare.

chicken house

IM001438.JPG

check out my ebay autions, , bid on some get me some paint, food, and beer

well the heat is being turned up on the chickenhouse..

my nieghbor said the mayor wants me to take care of my front porch, its a safty hazzard!, ahh, its about time to take care of it, this weekend., be done with it so to speek, one of the many conversations about the historic district capturing this street, was who would be hurt by it, like the low income folk across the street, i said "yea its a shame, but this is what happens , the value goes up and people move out cause thay cann't afford it". social darwinism to a degree. He (my crazed redneck neighbor) was steamed i would so casually look at it like this , he said "you big dummy they are comming after you! ", "there are alot of conservatives in this neighborhood and you house drives them crazy! you the next target, !"

"ahh , just try and take the chicken fence it will make my fucking careeer it will"

IM001436.JPG

my crazed redneck friend hates people who try to and tell him how to run his property, as for me too, but you have to know when you ain't gonna win, and realise , or do damage control, do what you want , come up with solutions not more problems, as i told him , "one chooses one's battles" its just a house, ( i don't think they are gonna demand me to tear it down, is that legal?) .

A couple of nights ago me and the boys were trying to speculate how long the chicken house would remain like this, , one of the fellows a "career" guy said we would grow up and change,
I said "now way , nothing will change the house will remain the same for ever, we know we are gonna be alive another 30 years, and it will reman the same, immortal! forever! like the great pyrimids of Egypt ", . "Untill we get our shit together, then we might improve the place and leave, but the identy of the house will remain a folk art land mark, at least if i fail miserably as an artist, i can leave this behind, ."
It was a great night me and this other guy telling of this older guy "What they fuck ! you don't get it , "

IM001431.JPG

Well I have only two more weeks left in the warehouse, then i am outta here, and on to complete the 8 paintings left over in Brenham, and so ends an era,.

So ends an era, humm, well this thursday the historic commision is having an meeting to take our street again, and its gonna be funny, and i am now assuming they are gonna get it ,i talked to a budddie of mine who owns a house on the street and he was redneck crazy over the whole deal, i am trying to figure out when they are gonna do this and start attaching chikenheads and fencepickets to every part of the house to caim chickengeorge style over it ,(grandfathered in) if not , once you touch it with out thier opinion, input which will be preserve the base structure no adding unless historically accurate, then your stuck with this idea of a house,, so i gotta bust a move an cover this place with chicken heads, to claim dominaces before those bastards start getting ideas about how my house should look like. My friend went wacko over the idea of a bunch of blue hairs telling them what historic flowers to plant to the type of door handel to have, , if i figure its really about politicing, you have to be liked and people won't harras you, i am not gonna go in there like some asshole , and scare everybody but more or less, make them my friends we are in a community and the chicken house like it or not is a wierd yard art land mark and i have artistic presants in San Marcos, i do have some respect, .

Bell!

IM001418.JPG
this is Brandons dog, nammed Bell, she is a bit skittish, around me in the Red10 studio, , i think, i started acting passive, the dog is real quiet but some how, the dog goes nutz barking at me,

Brandon said the dog never acted that way around me and he man-handles the dog to make it shut up, i just told him that we are have a moment where the dog likes to discover her barks, , i am someone safe to bark at, ? he is bemiffed about the whole deal, cause, i ain't doing anything to it,
form what i have noticed the dog is trying to herd me, and i stand stil and play this game with it where i move and she moves, its spooked her or something and she gets real excited, ,?
One evening i made my girlfrind Jealious over bell, she called and was asking who was at the studio, (art groupies?!?) i told her "there is this bitch barking at me all night and harrasing me!"
, . she got mad "who is this?.. who!"
i told her , , "her name is bell , and she has an bad additude, ,.,"
"what thu, i got to go ,!" she said ,
"hey you wanna talk to her, " i said,
I stomped my foot and the dog freaked out barking, , "there now are you worryed, you wanna talk to bell!"

"ok, yea i understand .,.,. when are you comming over i want to show you something"
she said

Schliefke Bolm Studio

IM001394.JPG

On Friday i went and visted Schliefke's studio , a nice large place, View image One of the things i noticed by this guy way back is , i think he is the first guy i have ever seen , meaning about my age, actually commited to the old masteres's modern classical. Something i cherish back in school but nobody did, i mean nobody understood this. Alot of Schliefke's work is sorta spun around the classic, there is something real nerdy about it too, cause, i was or am in the zone alot, all the stuff i made out in Floyd was made from a Tintoreto book i brought with me, mainly sketchs it was a starting point , but there is this determined analitical nerd side to dwelve deep in to classic theames like a fundalmentalist to a bible, a painter who produces like a machine, , Ahhh, as for the contempory. Infidal trash! , i can understand that,
View image

One of the things i noticed right off the bat was the Lavine/Beckman influance, something i liked in my own work, cause i like these artists, and so does he. which means he aspires to the "idea", and in the old masters way its how its painted, but with lucided mordern teaching it falls more into capturing a impression of paint.
View image

If i had to compair explaining the varyable "looks" rember its really a discriptive quality not ment to incriminate the orginality of any of his pieces, as much as mine, Art is additude and we borrow visual catch phrazes or buzz quets in paintings,. i like Schliefke work alot cause he is the only one besides me thats problay hardheaded enough to make it alone on painting and fueled by the ye'ol' myths and sentiments of the ol masters or perfected modernist (lavine-Beckman-Benton-clasic Picasso-)
IM001395.JPG
One of the Beckman angles is this like post Cezane primative characters put into a flowing landscapes, sorta metaphoric, , but visualy hard, not like a Lavine he is about atmossphere, the old masters what they could be if anything is creating a spectacular atmostphere, sorta twilight and sorta on the abstract. seen as Abstract, i would bet me and Schliefke know as much about the metphores in the ol masters as a Chinaman looking at MTV, its all in the flash and flare of thumbing though old masters books thats remebered But i would not underscore the lavine principal, what is this? , Lavine played alot with dramic light but used it like an impressionist, but had the setting as a classicist.
IM001398.JPG

like this painting, which Schliefke liked alot, its really about the light, on the beach and the shadows, this is what seen. Now the metaphores, his theames are his opinions, fat people on a beach eating, View image

One day I would like to have Schliefke as a studiomate, the computition would be fierce, cause were are singing the same toon which means the songs would have gotten louder, faster and more insain, "like dualing banjos" . but i would say less mystical more mechnical,, One of the things i heard P. Trussell talk about that evening when we hade vietnames food, View image
was the letting go and letting the painting guild itself, i would agree, but i have also heard this montras from N-Wilson all the time , (they went to school together ,UT late sixtys,) i guess there is this language thats problaby contectualised by the time your raised, especially about art, about how one makes art, (egoless-zenlike- etc). i would say as a word of advise from my upbring's we're pragmaitcs, i bet Schliefke is too, cause i can see he is more about thought out action with randomness and all, than achieving an enlighten painting there is a whole schema to that, that has a tendicy to neglect the detials, but i would say the devil is in the details! Me and Niel would argue this point, alot. i would say you have to know how to slip them in , the details, and not let it over right the over all picture,.

From what i gathered Schliefke came from the east coat and set up camp here in Austin a while back just making it alone on the sales of paintings, no local gallery reps, just shows alone, ( which is the way i would do it) there are plenty of spaces to show in Austin, odd local joints and he has a good website!.
so i bravo his efforts and look forward to seein what he comes up with, and maybe we can have a show down some where in the twilight zone..
View image

One note, N,Wilson-P,Trussell when they grew up in UT, there fathers were the Texas Regionals Spruce, Lester, etc, i suppose back in the sixtys they were trying to achieve some sorta spirtual speriorirty over the past, which means you gotta demonise it, i like to contectualize it, but post 70's and the death of painting, and the simply put therpyzation of it ,robbed the craft of it, which bascily Trussell and Wilson were forced to respect back when they was younge'ns, good painting that is. but painting seemed to be ego driven? and it was demolised in the seventys as crimanly comercial . So 20 plus years have came and gone. its come full circle back to craft . And there is this new idea, expose' of mental hoaxs(post moderen sarcasm). but none the less revived by the faithful (good painting , "like the songs grandma and grandpaw used to play"). which is why these guys like us,.
Oh, by the way Schliefke, your in Texas, holyness/Modernism haven't been completely dispelled, Its still ferminting in the back ally and lonely studios, embraced by the evanglist, and delivered by the fananitcs . much like when Trussell and Wilson were, when the were kids .,
they heard the enlighted speues of Umlauf , and believed, but couldn't deal with the heady egoness of it all,. and they did something differnt, so to speek,. but now being a bit older, they still love what it was that helped create them. (what was it?) is it all gone, I don't know what the hell happen in the sixty , in Texas , in an art studio, all thats gone, except the creeping whispers of old men saying "damn the infadel ! God's wrath to the infadel! for every gain of salt you will become for every word of the unholy chatter you speek!"

rained like hell last night

IM001415.JPG

Man.., laying in my bed, wondering if my tin is fasend firmly, cause very thing is flapping,. wondering where on the house is that noise comming from?.
the yard looks pretty flooded too, .

I guess i can for see a change!
i'm going to go back an embrases my roots "the Davros complex",
On saturday, when i went by the gallery on my way out i was talking to the owener and some homless guy came up on a bike, the gallery owener knew the guy, and they chatted , apparently the homless guy was and artist and had some shows with this homless art organisation,. i asked him if he ever showed work to Yarddog, ( a local folk art outsider gallery) he said he hadn't heard of it, i told him "well they would love to look at your work they are interested in guys like you,"
"Wow" he explained,
"Man just take your work down there and show it to them, just walk right in the door, the gallery represents artists like this , and since people have already been buying your work they may have already heard about you.,
and you know if they turn you down ..
you know what you should do,. I would walk right in there with an axe handle and bash the frount desk in, and fuck the place up
whatta ya have to lose.
if the're majoring in outsider art, don't you think some of the artists would be a bit volital,...
and hell, you would be known. thats for sure after that, your life is the "stuff" this gallery wants to represent, fucking up this place would be doing them a favor, give them back their edge,"

IM001416.JPG

you know come to think about it , in all my adventures of being on the "outsider zone" being a fucked up drunken loud mouth loser, is part of the outsider mastique , at least thats the way i can imagine it, After being out in Floyd, i realised that the outsider art market or folk art really only likes quiet, tame and introverted fuck ups,. i rember trying to convinces charlie that this was alright in the realm of mental illness ( he was a trained counciler had three mfa's) but he was unconvinced i was "fuck up"
I rember rolling around for nights on end trying to solve this controversy of a mystery, one's own intent vs whats real,? especialy when you have a peer group who says everything is fake.
I think the whole bad-slacker-outsider-punk thing is basicly the same to a degree. Could ones own self destrution be real or is it staged?... is there anything real to any of this.,.,, what is real? could you act yourself to the gave..
i guess the answer is yes, it doesn't matter what the reality of any circumstances is, if you don't reconise it doesn't exist, and the mind is a powerful machine. it doesn't matter what one does as much as what it means to oneself, any cries to measure who they are will typicaly fall on deaf ears, cause the meaning of any art making is interanly rewarded.
so yes you could act yourself to the grave, but who were you posturing?

one of my favorite antidotes from being out in Redford was once when Joey , this east coast artist came out to Redford to joint the art battle between me and Serg, he was made jealious by a "girlfriend" of ours Wendy, i never met the guy until he came out there, but thats how he knew of me, , he was a bit art snotty but was a talented painter, and wanted to discover his "soul" so to speek and ingage his imagination, well the point being is that, one of the charges brought from joey to us was
"who do you think you are?!" your not this!... or that...!."
yea, i agreed but look where we are at? ( your in the fucking desart!), , you mean you drove all the way out here to tell us off, are the tenticals of the art world so strong that they are gonna reach out into the smallest crack and holes of this country and to expose all the artists for making non-art,., why are you here, for that,? no one cares weather good or bad.. hey , the reason why we are here is to get away from that,.. hey i have an idea let pretent we have meaning, its fun its an experment, have you every had meaning, Do you know why you make things,. we are here to find out if we have meaning. is there a psychotic mogic to all this,."
Alot of the activiitys were in our studio,(private), but we did come out to chat.

I guess the meaning to all this is that , its good to pretent in art, but i remebr sergs saying he never pretents!
"hey lets throw ourselfs in a pool and try and drown ourselfs" you stupid jackass

There was about five larger ones in the show, couldn't shoot them.

Well the reception went pretty good saw some folks that i havn't seen in a while got to meet T Paul Hernadez for the first time which was exciteing. And i also shot down Schliefke's studio , which i will write up this week, meet him for the first time too. They have this whole art complex over on Bolm street.

Speeking of all this older work( Redford), 1999. i might head over there too, when i head back out there.

one of the more entroling moments of the evening was talking to T Paul , we both got a little snockered, and we both agreed that you ain't shit yif you cann't cook, an artist anit no good if he cann't cook, or love food. You have to know what tastes good, what to muix, and get results, and take pride in it,.

"high kick"

IM001380.JPG

this is one of my folk art finds on Ebay, John "Goo-Goo" Binn i like it alot, , i had to stop collecting art it put me in the poor house quick!

yesterday i was driving around with dennis , he is a resident in the Red10, his truck is broken down and he is wanted by the authiritys for an unpaided parking ticket, ( so he is stranded and hobby lobby called to offer him a job, for a whopping six buck an hour! he turned it down) we went over to Martindale and looked at all the old buildings he said it looked depressing, and creepy, one of the buildings over in Martindale was were they shot Texas chain II the factory seen in the end. i told him that ones art probaley should matchs one living, i think my art looks great in Martindale, old farm buildings, etc. Dennis is more of an slick urban pop art with alittle Mexi-street edge, he grew up in El Paso,. Anther artist i know David Elliot(click to site) his studio always made an impression on me, his work sorta matchs this cold and dark garrge he works in , some thing like the cloud of his mind, is in the garrage, you can see the acumulation of years of work built up in there, back loged. he has been on the Austin seen for years,. steadly working and produceing alot of great work, . The ol' Austin still has this ol'hippy rundowned effect, even know it being "improved" with suberia expansionism there is still pockets of it. Its to bad Alternate Current passed away, this was a showing space, probaley the first of the "outsider" art culture to develope, i was in a group show there once, (it was a high honnor to me) the older crowd who ran it, had this old crusty ,stubborn , outlaw, anti high art effect which with enough angst and beer to go around made it the outsider's outsider,. it was one of my favorite!, Grady like it alot to,o Grady Roper of Proper Gander, I rember one time hanging out with owner, Pruit , in this small home made bungalow, he is a bit older, sorta saying "yea boys this is the life, wanna another shot!" i hated to see it go, they always had this racey fuck edge to them, .

I realised that, over the last year of having this,(cdc) everything was building up for the ETshow and alot of side projects,,. but everything has expired, so to speek., Where to go,? the Big Bend, Its funny
Every time i ussaly take one of these trips, i like to feel that i have done all that i can do here ,and like its time to go back to the drawing board, start over , redo everything, .
Its gonna hurt the site here cause updates will be less frenquent, uploading photos will be tuff, i might have to fenagle a laptop somewhere, .
I als think its good to stop art for a while you sorta leave things behind, taste that is and whats the ideas good,
i don't mean to be toating drinking but there is a contrats in two moods about how to make pictures, when sober, i have a tendency to stay ridget to the idea of when i have layed down no matter how off baces and bad it its , its descovering "improvements" when a little buzzed , i get to the point, and say its done or its all fucked up, stop it, man come on, already,. its like a stop start thing,. when you stopp painting all together for a month or so, things your attracted to in recent working, have a tendency to go away, maybe for the bettter, but , one feels like wait i was on to something and was just to unorganized to make it happen,
IM001379.JPG
That was one of the great things about arviving out in Redford, i would walk around out on the desart floor, sorta forgot my past life(meaning life here in san marc) existed, ( i guess this is what maturity is, forgetting your an emotional kid anymore) ., I would bet as you get older there is just to much experiance, and it overwelms the mind and it starts massively catigorizing things with less impact, its unavoidable, . I also suppose that my lifestyle lends it to "less life experiance and more studio experiance" to try and slow down this slippery slop of time,. cause basicly the base meaning of painting is its excitement is as fun as watching a knittting contest, you have to see the excitement in the dramatic touch of the brush, adding and taking away,. it has to have a drama to it, but its very hidden , and can be overwelmed by life.

I have a reception over in Tambaleo, that bar show again, this Friday 7-10 in Austin, will have photo set of this work in site ,

well, last night i went over to the new warhouse as its called Red10, and started back to wark again, talked to Dennis, for a while,

i talked to my roomates about the whole histric district thing again, here is a controvercy i ran across, in all those town meetings.,
When they had three meetings, on the third one the general public came to gripe about the commision , horror stories in dealing with them, so all their foes showed up, but they were prepared!,
They had this one lady from MLK, two streets over , she was practily yelling at anyone who would be against the historic commision. Anyone against the commision represented the urban expansionism, thats going on, she parrelled it to " removing history" MLK street has alot of shot-gun houses, sorta run down in some parts, , the lady (she was Black, older) gave us San Marcos (white community) a big lecture on why the houses were there, and "you cann't remove the past!", it almost had the feeling like she was telling us not to remove the evidence to a crime seen, or something,. But she had a point, i like it that way, over there, but this other black lady stood up and said that her shotgun house was a piece of shit, and the only thing valueable about it was the lot., but if the district gets expanded she would not be able to tear it down, and rebuild and sell, but be submited a bill to improve.! she went on to say it was her mother house and she died, and wanted the house sale to go to educating her grandchildren, . And in a loud and pronouced voice, "You mean you don't want us to be educated , your deniening my child an education!" telling this to the historic comminsion mainly the one older Black lady,
I couldn't figure out how was right on this one, All i knew was some ones gonna pay,. for something? (MLK didn't get annxexed) but it might now, after the recent meetings. The more the meeting carryed on it go more philosopical, less about the Distric more about solving humanitys problems, it was amusing to seek the general public go way off task , and just grip about their lives, . I rember one point the Blue hairs made after the meeting, , " if we get all these properties, all the wackos will be at every one of our meetings," and
"there gonna ruin our Tea room chats!"
