Quietly working away in his garrage studio, over the last 20 plus years is the dark and grundgy mind of Daivd Elliott
A product of the UT fine art system of the late sixtys in Austin, he chose an introverted studio style not prepelled or inspired by fame or fortune but endless ponders of closed room abstractions and dark beauty of the inner assosiations of the mind's control over the hand,.
This painting above i think has had the longest showing record in the Blue Star, it hangs in a gallery over there tolite (Grona) the place i had a show at, which oddly enough , if a painting was like an animal, his would be a possum, hanging from a tree, late at night hiding away,. I always say your work will dictate a sorta of behavior as to where is displayed, i always akin my taste to the bathroom of a dairy queen,. and David is no exception, his work wil find its wall.
I first meet David

back in San Marcos , in 96, he was friends with kathy who started the San Marcos Fine art Center, and showed works there, i even visted him at his studio in Austin and was a show with him at A.C. Galley, he has along story , i am not qualfieded to talk about it,.
but i do admire his additude and many of times in the ponderings about the sixty generations, in regards to art and money, i have always had these moral/paradoxs to the storys, as to what is an artist life about ?,.
its good to know that one could exist, and i hazard to say "outside" any real sucess as an artist and (i feel certian) make more believeable work, cause the behavior thats creats it, evolves from the inner workings of the mind, not the compusion to complete the content of a show,
. Davids work reads like this endles chain pulled from a dark well becoming more rustic and slimey and he pulls up one link at a time, wondering if there is a bucket tied on the end.
its an admireable life, and the content of his work outside being shreded by complete sucess will most likly be discovered in that dimmly lit garrage he works in, thew the backstock of years worth the work,.

"Chicken looking at snake on the back of a hog"

its been fun talking to all the folks about the high score show, its going to be, the conversations ,
i had a real rapid conversation with Tieman this visting artist here on campus, he has been quiet controversal,
he is like , 70, heavy set , beared and has the humor of a sailor, real gutteral, but also exceptional sharp in the old ways of painting in regards to abstaction,, alot of Zen stuff, he reminded me of an aged Marlon Brano, he is sorta looked apone with contempt but i like the old guy, kinda like what a male will become if left to his bad vices, ,
one thing i like to do while i am up here is give the profs the works, except my trail boss, i like to lay it on them with post modern therorys about whats art now a days, Tieman is an adernt modernist and has a difcult time or any pations about any thing new, its alot of catch phrazes and quats about ego psychology and warning signs of represssions, very famliar. he is also from UT back in the 60's,. i find his knowlegege of what went on back then interesting if not rare, his profs and what the atomosphere was like in the early sixtys in Austin.
His work is in the minialist vien,
i woudl say i had one of the most rapideds conversations her with him cause of his awarenes to psychological issues, creative procesess, and politics( not world stuff) but even worst Art world stuff.

the only useful comment i heard was from an undergrad , who basicly explained what i did as a movie,

Wall one

after making these kind of sketchs based on old Atari video games with the minimalist kind of deliver, to make your imagination work on making these games fun, i would always rember the maze lay outs, and have great reverance to know i actualy have been there, and did that,.
this sketch is of the Atari Pac-man.

This is "Missle Comande" Atari
the game itself was a very fast pace game, you tryed to protect your citys from being blowed up , it would get faster and faster, and you would die, and this sound effect would come on when you lost, or game over, and this blane dead blue purple screen would flicker like a star lights, one would be relived and mesmerised,

"Dark Caverns" Atari
this was another game inwhich you ran around and tryed to excape the robots that shot at you, you get a gun with some bullets, i rember playing this game late at nigh saying to myself, you have to survie or your gonna die take it that seriously, , it had to be around 83 when this game came out,. you move real slow in it, and it had this creepy feel to it.

"Donkey Kong"
things that roll down and guys have to jump over them, and you have a benchmark of a score to get to get a free man,

"Porkys" atari

This is where it all started, i think this is the first video game porn, the blurred out figure was a naked lady based on the movie scene "the ladys shower", i rember seein it back them like wow, thats a naked lady, i cann't belive they did that,
when making the piece i likend it to Dekoning's women painitngs, distorted, but in this case a blocky figure that moves. i used gesso and papertowels to make the figure, no detail,. then there are also the black night of the Porkys sign, omnius.

"King Kong" Atari

i just like the tower in it, it was Ataris knock of Donkey Kong,

I had one proff say , this is horribale and i am asking for a beetin badd here int eh collgeg with this kinda wor, , one thing i have noticed is being here in 2006, is there any more radical femmiism left on campus, it wasn't like it used to be in the early ninties when i was in school, if i even make a one painting of a nude female model, i would have a young lady come running up to my work saying"Quit objectifyin me Quit objectifying" it was like a war crime,. so i am testing the waters,
i think its less about womans issues, or at least with these four pieces as it is just fun to melt down figures, barbe dolls always a load issue, now if it were GIJoes, nobody would hve a problem up here, but thats not the intent,. i see them more like lost characters in this struggle for life, , called "chose life".

Back when i was over in Alvin 88-90, i painted in theis junior collge and ther was this lady prof there Darla Wetzel she was a pentacostal cracker who went to this very large church living stones, everybody knows about it , Well she made this antiabortion piece about babys being cut up useing dolls and red paint in these like Frank stella swirls of 80s broachs abstractions with baby and blades, the student bodys thought she was crazy and the pieces caused a stir, but to her this was serious art and a serious statement,.

this is a sketch inspired from melting barbe dalls and donkey kong style lay outs, i think if i had enough dolls and some gasoline this would make an awsume piece, i like art work thats seems to have some rules to it like the casuallitys of a game play the ingrain marks they leave behind, you cann't phox that stuff

this is a painting , Casa de cocks, i like this painting done by Dennis hodges, he is still over at the red 10 warehouse, the painting is also the nick name for our house back in san marcos

this is an instalation of Enrique, whats his last name? an artist up here, he also came from san marcos too, the intalation is about this couple , called pizza and beer, the campus cops came and confiscated the beer, ,. i thin i am going to put a beer in my next show, have it semerged in piss, and wait for them to reach in ther to get it our, . they gots to take the fuckig beer of the campus!,.

the show was about this couple. the male was on the john and she was looking out the window, it had this sorta tierd, bored , look to it, like the dudrum of on unexcited relationship, or a babe only residing in ones memory or sketchs, one interesting note was the pile of pencil shaving on the coach,

Yeas its box man in all his splender and glory sitting in the bluestar art complex, "fire in the belly show", the staff said they had to cover it up when they were hanging the show cause of the smoked chicken bones, were smelling the place up, they wanted to know if i ate those drumsticks, i said "yeap sure did fingerlicking good, i hand liked every one of them,.

man today , i am worked up over shit, being here on campus there are alot of things that i get stired up about, and one of them is the mindless beurcatical rule making, its fasinating really,
i have spent alot of time tryin to figure out the nature of beuarcays(sp), its the one nessary evils here in any society,
well, as it goes, or to cut this down as short as i can, i don't like safty people for some reason they always remind me of my mother, these worry warts who are out to protect you from yourself, being on campus, and in a work room sculpt dept they have all these tools there for the students to work with, well, the safty patrol came around a while back checking for stuff, and i about went ape shit on them,
asking questions like" when will the madness end?
trying to get them to admit this has nothing to do with saftey more outta lawsuit preventions " and
why don't they make everything safe, basicly morron proffing the building, hell lets not stop here at the table saw let make every possible thing safe
,
i was a bit grumpy and unleashed on these two fat ladys with a clip boards walking around slowly checking things like looking for crap to but people on,
the reason why this is so irratinging
is why the fuck don't thay go shut down baseball for fear of someone being hurt,
these are tools here people use them!
its got me thinking about where this all is going here in our country,
if you walk away with any message about what i have said iin this site, , maybe the whole meaning or complant to my pathic existance of an artist its that the Mothers are comming!, and its gonna be in the form of a slow creeping legalality of preventive psychology, risk managements, the ever expanding world of lawsuits and the laws they create, insurance companys and the complete erosion of any concept of human responciblity.

so, when i met the safty experts, i asked them alot of questions as to why they do this, why, ?
i even in the heat of this discussion, they took me on, much like a mother saying " you know what happens when you play with that BB gun!" i had to preface the whole thing, are you gonna label me a terrorist by disagreeing with you, cause i could see this as an easy step for some folks, trying to keep it human, the conversation went on and basicly they admit its about not being sued?

i guess my gumtion to this whole "safty idea" why do we have this?(or beiliev in this so much
, the simple reality of it is a farce,(safty) prevention,
now i am not talking about all safty stuff, i mean the nonsencal ones, the irratating ones,

but it exist , like a quazar, religion, where these essotrics of rules will get more stepped in the supperstion of being sues&hurt or cursed, "we need to do this or that.. some one might get hurt.,prevention, strips function,

i tell you folks hear me now and beleive me later, this is a building proceses, and its not gonna stop until
a perfect utopia is evoleved, a safty society,
its easy, noncomforntational, rational, and its all dictated bay a God greater than common sences, money

been a little under the weather, sorta burned out, need some distractions to make me forget things, like videogames or toysoldiers,

this thing scraed some people, i had to bolt it down to the wall, so it wouldn't fall off, i told the gallery owner that i would feel horrible if it fell on her and killed her, plus all the mousetraps would have gone off when it crushed her, yeaks!
massive lawsuit!
one funny note, this family took there children into the gallery and the mother was trying to tell the kids what this art was, the two boys kept laughing sayibng its pacman its pac man, they were 8 or 9, the mother corrected them no its art, thinking they were spouting off gibberish about something, "no its art piese" i think the mother was struggling to find somehting redemable about it, like look at the circus peanust and then she read the title, and was corrected as to what the design was, the kids were laughing and pointing, looking strait up in the air
i had the thing mounted at five feet up.

So the show is up and running, its marks a highlight in the facts that i made the thing in a about a month in a half, the three main paintings, are going to set in motion this new/old painting directive about landscapes cryptic whimsical, using light in an impressionistic way, sorta going back to paintings i made in 2000/01 but now , paintined with much more delibratness and color matching, no tricks this time
and there will be more

The mysteyious mind of brian Jobe,
one of my favorite persons to talk to when i got here is brian , he is a solf spoken ,very nice indiviual who could on occasions give of glare, like he is about to lose it,
his work is about playing with things and he spends alot of time maticulasly putting togther things that looks to have came from a UPS store packing material plastic zip tie, and colored plaste, see photo above, he makes arrangements with them , in light of a Calder or the kinda work thats relates to consumer materal ,transformed into something magical.
